Japan National Committee for UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women) operates, based on the Recognition Agreement with UN Women, to raise funds and to advance public support and interest for UN Women’s work on gender equality and women’s empowerment. It also monitors and encourages its Government to increase contributions to UN Women.
Formerly known as Japan National Committee for UNIFEM, it changed its name to Japan National Committee for UN Women as UNIFEM was merged with other three UN agencies into UN Women on 1 January 2011.
Building on our experiences for the last eighteen years, we renew our commitment to vigorously support the work of UN Women toward achieving its mandate and mission.
Japan National Committee for UN Women has been accredited as ‘Certified Nonprofit Organization’ since 2008, which enables donations from individuals as well as from private companies to be tax-exempted.
November 1992: Establishment
With a strong commitment to support women in developing world who are often poverty-stricken, discriminated and suffering from gender-based violence, International Women’s Year Liaison Group、Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women, and Yokohama Women’s Association took an initiative to set up the Japan National Committee for then UNIFEM.
Japan National Committee was inaugurated on 24 November 1992 as the 13th National Committee of UNIFEM. Inauguration ceremony was held at the United Nations University in Tokyo and was attended by approximately 300 people. Ms. Julie Andrews, then UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador, joined us in the Inauguration Ceremony.

In line with the creation of UN Women, the Japan National Committee for UNIFEM changed its name to the Japan National Committee for UN Women. Building on our experiences since its establishment in November 1992, we renew our commitment toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.
We got accredited as Certified Non-Profit Organization (NPO) in June 2008, which enables donations to the Japan National Committee for UN Women as tax-exempted.
July 2003: Ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary
We celebrated our 10th anniversary on 18 July 2003 at the United Nations University in Tokyo. Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, then Executive Director of UNIFEM, joined the ceremony and Dr. Sadako Ogata, former UN High Commissioner for Refugees and one of the advocates for establishing the Japan National Committee, gave a keynote speech.
Inviting Ms. Noeleen Heyzer as one of panelists, a Panel Discussion “Development and Women: Toward Gender Equality, Development and Peace” was held.
A booklet “Women and Reconstruction: A Report from Afghanistan” which recorded the keynote speech by Dr. Ogata and the panel discussion at the 10th anniversary ceremony was published in February 2004 from Iwanami Shoten.
